Wednesday security audit video call at Wolfy's tidy desk, hardware security key by keyboard, confident Wolfy shares password manager metadata screen to nineteen participant thumbnails

The Password Manager Panic

Excellent security. Inconvenient search results.

How the story begins

NarratorWednesday, 11 AM. Security audit day brought SOC 2, ISO 27001, vendor questions, and the atmosphere of a room collectively remembering old passwords. Wolfy felt prepared. He had hardware-key authentication, scoped vaults, rotated credentials, and the reassuring comfort of documented operational habits.

WolfyThis should be beautifully boring. No shared credentials. No secrets in source code. Clear access records. I can demonstrate the workflow without revealing a secret value, then spend the afternoon feeling quietly superior to spreadsheets named passwords-final-really-final. What could possibly become personal about that?

NarratorAt 11:07, nineteen people watched his screen share. The auditor asked how engineers accessed secrets. Wolfy opened the password manager and searched for prod. The results included company entries, his tail controller, an awoo chat administrator, a boop API, and a convention badge scanner.

WolfyThe values are still protected. The project names are doing an impressive amount of damage to my composure all by themselves. I can explain the separate vaults directly, or first narrow the shared view to the company entries the auditor actually requested.
